Alfred Jeremias

Gabriel Karl (21 February 1864, near Che mnitz Markersdorf - January 11, 1935, Leipzig) - German asyriolog and scholar of religion of the Ancient East. In 1891 he publishe d the first German translation of the Epic of Gilgamesh. From 189 0 until his death he was pastor of the Lutheran church in Leipzig, and from 1922 was also a professor at the University of Leipzig. He received honorary doctorates in 1905 (University of Leipzig) and 1914 years (University of Groningen). He was one of the leading proponents of panbabilonizmu, explaining the origin of the Hebrew Bible in the Babylonian mythology.
